Everyone is keen on figuring out how to integrate AI into their websites. With WordPress, there are numerous ways AI can be applied, and one of the most effective is using AI to select tags.
Choosing tags and taxonomies is a simple task, but it can also be monotonous and easy to forget. That’s why it’s perfect for AI to handle. Interestingly, many well-known SEO plugins are already doing this.
In this instance, we’ll be using the AI Autotagger plugin by TaxoPress. This plugin can connect with various AI engines like OpenAI, IBM Watson, Dandelion, and more. It’s straightforward to use and helps ensure everything is tagged properly.
Today, I’ll show you how to use AI to choose tags in WordPress.
This tutorial is for:
WordPress
6.4.2
Plugin: AI Autotagger v3.11.1

Why Have AI Choose Tags in WordPress?
Tags in WordPress, just like categories, help users and search engines understand your content better and find related posts easily. Adding tags might seem straightforward and quick once you get the hang of it, but it’s also easy to forget. Neglecting this simple step can impact your site’s visibility and user experience.
That’s where AI can be a game-changer for tagging your posts. AI can assist by analyzing your content and suggesting appropriate tags, ensuring you don’t miss out on this crucial step.
How Does AI Tagging Work?
AI tagging works by scanning your post content and comparing it to the tags already in your library. Based on this comparison, it recommends tags. While this tutorial focuses on tags, AI can also handle other metadata.
However, AI isn’t perfect. It’s still evolving and can make mistakes. For example, if you casually mention “WordPress” in a post that isn’t about WordPress, AI might still suggest it as a tag. So, always review the AI’s recommendations.
How to Choose Tags with AI in WordPress
Step 1: Install AI Autotagger
First, go to the Plugins section in your WordPress admin panel and click on “Add New.”

Search for “AI Autotagger,”

install it, and activate the plugin.

Step 2: Choose What Features Are Enabled
By default, all features are enabled. While this might be great for some, it could be overwhelming if you don’t need all the options. For this tutorial, we’ll focus on enabling only the Taxonomies feature.

To configure, click on TaxoPress and then on the Dashboard. Disable any features you don’t need by toggling the switches. Make sure the Taxonomies option is enabled.

Note:
The default settings are usually fine, but you can explore the Settings section to disable certain AI engines or adjust other preferences if needed.
Step 3: Create Tags
The plugin suggests tags from your existing tag library, so you’ll need to create tags for your site. If you already have a set of tags, you can skip this step.
Otherwise, go to Posts and then Tags in WordPress to add new tags.

For example, if you run a sports website, you might create tags like Baseball, Basketball, Football, and so on. League names like MLB, NBA, and NFL, as well as team names, can also be great tags. The idea is to make it easier to identify and connect related content.
To add a tag, enter the tag name in the appropriate box and click “Add New Tag.”

Step 4: Adding Tags to Posts
Now, view an existing post with some content for the AI to scan.
Scroll down to the TaxoPress AI section.

Click on the “Suggest Existing Terms” option.

For instance, if your post mentions “Sports,” “Baseball,” and “Yankees,” those will be suggested as tags.

Remember, the AI doesn’t understand the context deeply—it matches words to your tag library. Review the recommendations carefully and add the appropriate tags to your post.
AI Has Its Limitations
AI has tremendous potential and will likely revolutionize web design in the future, but we’re not there yet. Current AI technology can help with tagging but isn’t foolproof. For instance, it might miss context and suggest irrelevant tags.
While some plugins can generate tags from scratch, their suggestions can often be vague or unrelated, requiring manual correction. So, don’t rely entirely on AI—use its recommendations as a starting point.
